Hu Shih (17 December 1891 – 24 February 1962) was a Chinese philosopher, essayist and diplomat. Hu is widely recognized today as a key contributor to Chinese liberalism and language reform in his advocacy for the use of written vernacular Chinese. He was influential in the May Fourth Movement, one of the leaders of China's New Culture Movement, was a president of Peking University, and in 1939 was nominated for a Nobel Prize in literature. He had a wide range of interests such as literature, history, textual criticism, and pedagogy.

胡适(1891年12月17日-1962年2月24日),原名嗣穈,行名洪骍,字希彊,后改名适,字适之,笔名天风、藏晖、铁儿等,安徽绩溪上庄村人,因提倡文学革命而成为新文化运动的领袖之一,曾担任国立北京大学校长、中央研究院院长、中华民国驻美大使等职。胡适兴趣广泛,著述丰富,在文学、哲学、史学、考据学、教育学、伦理学、红学等诸多领域都有深入的研究。主张少谈主义,主张先疑后信,主张科学佐证,尽信书不如无书。
